Why is the city replacing the old parking meters?

The new parking kiosks are being introduced to improve parking turnover and availability on the Square. Traditional meters often led to long-term parking in premium spaces—especially on game days—making it difficult for customers to access local businesses. The modern kiosk system ensures a consistent flow of open spots, keeping our downtown dynamic and accessible for everyone.

What happens to leftover time on a meter? Can it be used by the next driver?

Our new system is entirely "pay-by-plate," meaning your parking session is securely linked to your specific vehicle's license plate rather than a physical parking space. Because of this, time does not carry over to the next driver. This creates a much fairer system for everyone. Instead of relying on the chance of finding leftover time, this setup guarantees that when a car leaves, that premium space is immediately reset and available for the next customer. This exact type of efficiency is what creates the steady turnover our local businesses rely on to thrive.

Where does the parking revenue go

100% of the revenue generated from downtown parking is reinvested directly back into the City of Oxford. By maximizing the efficiency of our parking spaces, we generate crucial funding for downtown beautification, street maintenance, and the development of future infrastructure and parking solutions. Paying for parking is a direct investment in keeping Oxford beautiful and functional for years to come.

When does the new system take effect?

The transition is happening right now! You will see new parking signs with assigned lot numbers going up starting tomorrow. The new kiosks will officially go live and begin accepting payments this Monday.

How do I pay using the new kiosks?

The process is quick and simple. Just park your vehicle, note your license plate number and the lot number on the nearest sign, and head to a kiosk. Follow the on-screen prompts to enter your information and pay for your desired time. You can also bypass the kiosk entirely and pay through the Passport Parking App right from your phone.
